This week we want to show you how we were able to monitor, in real time and without any stain, the cellular thickness during the different mitotic phases. To this aim, we identified the specific RI range corresponding to the cell membrane and nucleic acid with our software STEVE.
In the chart below, we show a mitotic cell from prophase onward. You can appreciate how the cell became progressively rounder and thicker during the first mitotic phases, reaching a peak during the transition between the Anaphase and Telophase.
After that, coinciding with the segregation of the genetic material and the final cytokinesis, we witness a rapid decrease in cellular thickness to a new minimum level corresponding to the new interphase.
